Community invited to “Conquer the Escarpment” in memory of Laker alumnus
Nipissing University invites the community to lace up their running shoes in support of the Lakers Nordic Ski Team by participating in the Conquer the Escarpment Shelby Dickey Memorial Fun Run/Walk on Sunday, October 27, at 11 a.m.
The event, hosted by Nipissing University, honours the memory of Nipissing alumnus Shelby Dickey, a Bachelor of Physical Health Education and Master of Science in Kinesiology graduate. Shelby was a talented athlete and co-captain of the Nipissing Lakers Nordic Ski team, whose life was tragically cut short in a cycling accident in 2019.
“Shelby was, and continues to be an inspiration to her teammates, bringing a joyful spirit to even the most challenging circumstances,” said Dr. Toivo Koivukoski, Associate Professor at Nipissing University and Head Coach of the Lakers Nordic Ski Team. “Her legacy lives on through the scholarship established in her name and this annual event, which encourages everyone to enjoy the outdoors while challenging themselves.”
The run/walk is a 4.5-kilometer course that starts at the Founders House Residence Complex (822 Gormanville Road) and ends at the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) Student Centre (211 College Drive). After the race, participants are invited to an outdoor social featuring music and hot cocoa.
Registration for the Conquer the Escarpment Fun Run/Walk is now open. The event is free to join, with participants encouraged to make a donation. An optional lunch is available for $20 per person, with the final day to register for lunch being October 23. All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the Lakers Nordic Ski Team.
