Increasing need for Salvation Army programs and services

Officials with the Salvation Army North Bay say the need is growing in our community with food insecurity.

The annual kettle campaign is underway with traditional and tap-enabled kettles set up on the weekend at area retailers.

“There’s more people that are experiencing food insecurity like every other place in Canada that we’re seeing that increase,” says Major Stephanie Watkinson. “That’s why we’re really trying to focus on solution-based programming and services so we can help people not have to go to a food charity for a basic item like food.”

The goal for this year’s campaign is $250,000.

Watkinson says it’s what is needed to run their year-round programs and services, noting they weren’t able to reach their goal last year.

“This past year we did dip into our reserves quite a bit so we’re hoping that this year we can make our goal or at least come really come close to it so we can continue offering those services that help people change their lives,” she says.

The Salvation Army will also be on the move in the new year, from McIntyre Street East to Main East on the overpass into West Ferris.

“At the new location at the overpass we will have our church location as well as our family services and we’re adding a small thrift store as well,” Watkinson says.

Planning and renovations with the move have been ongoing since July 2022.
