Flood Warning Continues

Flood Warning Continues

A Flood Warning continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline in the City of North Bay and Municipality of Callander and the Parks Creek watershed.

A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety has been issued for the La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive in North Bay, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Lake Nipissing's water level is just below its maximum 'non-damage' level, and it is anticipated that the levels on Lake Nipissing will continue to decline this week," explained Githan Kattera, the Flood Duty Officer at the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA). Minimal rainfall is forecasted for the next 5 days, he added.

“The Flood Warning issued last week remains in effect and NBMCA continues to operate the Parks Creek Backflood Control structure, located at Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area in North Bay,” says Chitra Gowda, NBMCA Flood Warning Coordinator.  According to the current forecast, we are expecting 5-10 mm of rainfall over the next five days, with the most expected on Saturday (May 11) and Sunday (May 12). This rainfall will be accompanied by a mix of sun and clouds. Overall, the forecast suggests minimal impact and no significant disturbances. The landscape condition has shifted from dormant vegetation to the start of flourishing growth, providing increased space to retain water. The La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive is influenced by Lake Nipissing’s high water levels and may be vulnerable to increased flow from upstream.

The public is encouraged to keep children and pets away from watercourses and shorelines. Area residents and visitors, especially those in low-lying areas, are encouraged to monitor the conditions as they develop and take proper precautions during times of high flows. If you have a flood emergency, please contact your municipality. If you live in an unincorporated township, please contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – North Bay District.

As part of the NBMCA Flood Forecasting and Warning Program, staff will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions and update this message if needed based on the changing weather/streamflow conditions. Staff remain in contact with municipalities and other partners as required.
