Fownes, Bernard Lee

Fownes, Bernard Lee

August 30, 1934 – May 19, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Bernard Lee Fownes announce his passing on May 19, 2024 in his 90th year.  Beloved husband, soul mate and card partner of Charlotte Anne (nee MacLean) for 68 years.

Loved and cherished father of Wallace (Bonny), John (Denise), Patricia White (Dale), Terrence (Denise), Brenda O'Donnell (Shawn) and Bernice Fournier (David).  Dear brother of Jacqueline MacDonald (late Fraser) and Leo Fownes (Joan).

Pa Bernie will be sadly missed by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Bernie was predeceased by his parents John & Elizabeth Fownes and siblings Frankie, Donny, Nancy and Maureen; sister-in-law Wilma Ransom (Raymond surviving) and brother and sister-in-law Emmett & Isabella Jessome.

Dad's life journey began in Big Baddeck, Cape Breton, NS.  He took the train to Ontario in 1957 and never left, settling in Feronia in 1964.  Dad worked construction all his life, but loved working with horses best.  You can take the boy away from the farm, but not the farm away from the boy!

Dad enjoyed card games, hunting, fishing, houseboating, gardening, raising chickens and turkeys and doing sleigh rides with his prized Clydesdales, including many years at the downtown walk.

Dad was a proud member of Masonic Lodge 617 and Hoisting Engineers Union 793.

The family will be forever grateful to Drs. Brian & Kathryn Shaw for years of care, compassion and friendship. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Nipissing Serenity Hospice for their kind and gentle care.

Online condolences can be made at www.hillsidefuneral.ca. There will be a private family celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nipissing Serenity Hospice or please perform a random act of kindness in Dad's memory.
