(UPDATE) Hwy 11 re-opens under OPP escort and Significant Weather Event ended in North Bay

By Richard Coffin

Ontario Provincial Police reports Highway 11 northbound from North Bay reopened at 9 am, under a controlled escort.

A Ministry of Transportation snowplow is leading the northbound traffic, followed by an OPP cruiser, to ensure the safe reopening of the highway after extended weather‑related closures throughout the Northeast Region.

Motorists are advised of the following

· No passing is permitted at any time – this includes any vehicle within the convoy, including the lead vehicles.

· Speed will be regulated by the OPP, based on current road and visibility conditions.

· Traffic will move as a single escorted convoy until the route is confirmed safe for normal travel.

· Similar controlled openings will be taking place across the Northeast Region as conditions allow.

Drivers are urged to operate with caution and allow extra time for travel as winter conditions continue to impact the area.

Meantime, the city has ended the Significant Weather Event for several roads off Highway 11 north.

Just after 8:30 am on Tuesday, officials said municipal roads off the highway have now been plowed and sanded.

Crews will continue regular winter maintenance operations.

The city is thanking the public for its patience and cooperation.

Meantime, West Nipissing declared a Significant Weather Event across the municipality on Monday.

It continues until further notice.

Officials say all municipal roads and sidewalks are considered to be in a “state of repair” until the declaration has ended.
