Urgent drug alert issued by Nipissing First Nation
Nipissing First Nation has issued an urgent alert saying a spike in overdoses has been reported in the past 24 hours.
In a release, officials say it raises serious concern that a more potent substance may be circulating the community.
They say the exact cause is unknown, but note street drugs may be cut or mixed with dangerous substances such as benzos (benzodiazepines), xylazine, medetomidine, fentanyl, or carfentanil.
The Anishinabek Police Service says there were reports of two suspected overdoses, one of which was fatal.
If you use drugs, officials say take steps to reduce your risk:
• Do not use alone
• Ensure you have naloxone on hand
• Do a small test dose
• Know your condition and tolerance
• Call 911 if an emergency arises
