‘Very high’ levels of flu reported by the health unit

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is reporting ‘very high’ levels of influenza in the region.

Officials say there were 155 lab-confirmed Influenza A cases as of Dec. 13, compared to one case during the same time period last year.

The vast majority (129) are in Nipissing

Along with the flu, the health unit says COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses are also circulating throughout the region.

“The holidays are a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends, and a time to look out for one another’s well-being,” says Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, Medical Officer of Health.. People should consider using one or more layers of protection and staying home if they or someone they live with is unwell.”

Officials say layers of protection include:

• When possible, stay home when you are unwell
• Receiving your flu and COVID-19 vaccines
• Washing hands often with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• Covering coughs and sneezes with your arm or a tissue
• Frequently disinfecting high-touch surfaces
• Being mindful of your distance from others when out in public

Vaccines are available at participating pharmacies with appointment-based clinics (flu, COVID, and RSV vaccines) taking place at the health unit on Oak St. West in North Bay on Dec. 22, 30 and 31 from 8:30 am to 4:15 pm.
