It is with the deepest of sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ioannis “John” Vlahakis. He passed away on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at the age of 89 surrounded by his family.
John leaves behind a legacy of hard work, a giving heart, and an endless love for his family. He was the devoted husband of Chryssoula for 61 years. The loving father to his three daughters, Tasia “Tess” (Nick), Gioula (Tim), Titsa and the cherished Pappou to Jesse, Alexandra, and Alexe.
He is predeceased by his parents Peter and Tasia Vlahakis, and brothers Tasos (deceased) surviving wife Giota, George (deceased) surviving wife Eugenia, Christos and wife Eleni (deceased), sister Aggeliki and husband George (deceased), and surviving sister Avgero (husband Meletis deceased).
John was born on February 8, 1937 in Pakia Lakonia, Greece. There he worked as an electrician’s apprentice before he decided to emigrate to Canada at the age of 26 for a better life. In Montreal, he met his lovely bride Chryssoula and married in 1964. In 1970, they decided to make another move to the city that was their home for over 50 years, North Bay. Once there, John worked as a painter eventually starting his very own successful painting business. He took pride in his work and built a reputation based on honesty, hard work and always did it with a smile. John loved to spend time with his family and had an endless passion for Greek dancing.
We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the staff at NBRHC on the A3 and C3 Wing, Dr. Tuomi, and a very special thanks to Dr. King for her endless kindness, support, and understanding over the years and especially these past couple of months.
Visitation for John will be held at McGuinty Funeral Home, North Bay, on Tuesday, March 10th, 2026, from 11am-1pm. A funeral service for John will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate, if desired, donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre in John’s memory.
We will cherish you in our hearts forever! We love you so much Ba! We will miss you Pappou!
