Blind River knocks off Powassan in OT

A nifty Nicholas MacIsaac marker, 2:35 into overtime, proved to be the difference as the Blind River Beavers skated away with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in a well-played Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the proceedings as Kaden Dubreuil drove down the right side and put a play in front that saw Kaleb Ellard jump in and fire in his first NOJHL goal, in beating Beavers’ netminder Connor Dunham-Fox.

Blind River came back to tie it at 15:49 when Aaron Dukeshire split the Powassan defence and went in alone when he slid a low shot through the legs of goaltender Austin Seibel.

Heading to the middle frame, the Beavers took the lead off a long-range dump-in that saw Clark Furman win the race for a puck that hit off the end boards right to him and saw him pump it over the shoulder of Seibel at 7:30.

Countering a couple of shifts later, the home side drew level thanks to Marcus Krats, who wheeled into the Blind River zone and lifted a short side backhand past Dunham-Fox, on a man advantage, for his initial NOJHL tally.

Regaining the lead while shorthanded, the Beavers’ Jonah McIndoo put a feed into the slot where a waiting Shea Crewson buried his first league marker.

A nice tying tally saw the Voodoos even it at 3-3 as Ryan Patrick put a nice pass over to the right circle where Cayden Kowal cranked it off the iron and in with 6:40 to go in the third to help force extra time.

Skating three aside in OT, Blind River prevailed as King used a nice spin move in the left circle and laid a pass into the slot where MacIsaac darted in and neatly tucked in the game-winner to end it.

The assist helped King run a point streak to six games in succession.

With the victory, the Beavers raised their record to 10-4-1-0 overall.

Picking up a point in defeat sees the Voodoos record go to 4-5-0-2.
