Voodoos win over Gold Miners

The Powassan Voodoos saw Ryan Saginaw set-up the tying goal, then later shovel in the game-winner, for his first marker in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, as part of a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Friday night as the Powassan Sportsplex.

Converting on an early turnover helped the Gold Miners take the lead when Jordan Fitger went in alone on Voodoos’ starter Tyson Wilcox and buried a snap-shot, blocker-side, for his 13th tally of the season at 1:36.

Answering with an equalizer just over four minutes into the second period, Powassan’s Cade Dubreuil collected his team-best 19th tally by taking a crisp pass from Saginaw and promptly whipping it past Kirkland Lake netminder Caleb Shuker from between the circles.

Up a skater late in the frame, Saginaw supplied his first NOJHL goal at 19:03 as he went to the net and shovelled in a feed through the crease from Marcus Krats.

Staying low-scoring late into regulation, the Gold Miners got Shuker out for an extra attacker with over two minutes to play.

However in the final moments, Powassan won a draw in their own end, which led to a Daniil Viscu icing it with an empty netter from distance to secure the home ice victory.
