Watch for School Buses

City police are detailing some of the most common instances where drivers are not stopping for the flashing lights of the school bus.

This as a zero-tolerance traffic enforcement campaign is underway with back to school and buses back on the road Tuesday.

The North Bay Police Service says the list comes from local school bus operators, and includes;

  • Drivers are distracted and do not notice flashing lights
  • Drivers stop briefly, then continue through as if it’s a stop sign, while students are still boarding
  • Drivers become impatient during extended stops for children with mobility needs, and deliberately drive past the bus while a child is still boarding

“These behaviours are dangerous, illegal, and completely unacceptable,” says Chief Daryl Longworth.

City police say their ‘Slow it Down for School’ campaign includes zero tolerance for dangerous driving in school zones and failing to stop for school buses.

They say on a first offence failing to stop for the bus can result in a minimum $490 fine, six demerit points, and higher insurance premiums.
