Wayne Joseph Dugas

In Loving Memory of Wayne Joseph Dugas

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Joseph Dugas, surrounded by his loving family on April 10, 2025, at the age of 81 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.

Wayne was born on January 25, 1944, to Agnes Dugas (née Lagassie) and Willard Dugas (both predeceased). He spent his childhood on Trout Lake with his brothers Tim and Rod, and cousins, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Wayne met the love of his life, Elizabeth Dugas (née Calaiezzi) at Teacher’s College. They married in July of 1967, and together, they shared 58 wonderful years of love, laughter, and devotion.

Wayne’s life was defined by his deep love for his family. He was the proud father of Carrie Demers (Darren), Chris Dugas, and Brad Dugas, and a devoted grandfather to Zach (Jen), Alexandra (Michael), Stephanie (Connor), and Valerie (Kaelan). He also cherished the role of great-grandfather (Gigipa) to Lily, Harriet, Marcus, Freddie, and Aubrey. Wayne is also survived by his brothers Rod Dugas (Bonnie), Tim Dugas (Erika), and many loved nieces and nephews.

A dedicated teacher, Wayne began his 32-year career in education in Ottawa and Oakville; eventually spending the majority of his career as a principle for the Near North District School Board. Throughout his life, he touched countless hearts with his generosity, humility, and witty sense of humor, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

Wayne passed on his love for the outdoors to his children. He explored photography and enjoyed spending time playing sports, camping, hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and woodworking. Wayne was a natural storyteller who’s stories brought laughter to many.

In 2008, Wayne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a battle he faced with remarkable courage and resilience. He never complained, even in his final years, always finding humor and cracking a smile whenever he could. His unwavering spirit through his illness will be remembered as a testament to his character.

Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff and volunteers at Eastholme for their exceptional care during Wayne’s time there, and to Dr. Maaskant and the emergency department staff at North Bay Regional Health Centre for their exceptional care and kindness in his final moments.

Wayne will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of his family, friends, and students. As we say goodbye with love and peace, we wish that wherever he is, the sun is warm, the breezes are gentle, the water is clear, the fish are hungry, and the moose slow. Especially on days like this, we will think of him and know that he is at peace.

A visitation will be held at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Road, on Friday, April 25th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A funeral mass will take place at Pro Cathedral of the Assumption on Saturday, April 26th, at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson’s Canada or Eastholme Home for the Aged in Wayne’s memory. Online condolences can be made at www.hillsidefuneral.ca
