City police receiving calls about pets being left in hot vehicles
The North Bay Police Service is issuing a hot weather reminder for pet owners.
Officials say with more hot weather ahead and recent calls about pets left in cars, they’re reminding people about the dangers of leaving animals unattended in vehicles.
They say even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside cars can rise quickly and become deadly.

Police say if you see a pet left in a hot car:
– Look for signs of distress: heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, and unresponsiveness
– If you’re concerned but don’t see clear distress, call Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625)
– Stay by the vehicle and note the make, model, colour, and license plate while waiting for help
– Call 911 immediately if the animal appears in distress.
In terms of the law, city police say leaving an animal in conditions that cause distress or harm, like a hot car, is illegal under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act and can lead to fines, charges, and even jail time.
