Franco-Cité student bakes gold medal win at skills competition
A grade 11 student at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité has turned bakeware into hardware with a gold medal win at the Skills Ontario Competition.

Janie Giroux won the Baking event, outwhisking the field of 28 other competitors
Officials say she earned top spot on the podium at the May 4-6 Toronto event with three refined creations.

They included a delicately flavoured sponge cake, a rich and textured chocolate babka bread, as well as Napoleon bars and mille-feuilles infused with the flavour of Earl Grey tea.
Giroux will now represent Team Ontario at the national Skills Canada event, taking place on May 28 and 29, also in Toronto.
“This achievement illustrates not only Janie’s talent, but also the quality of the specialized programs offered at all three Franco-Nord French-language Catholic Secondary Schools and the importance of promoting skilled trades among young Francophones,” says Tina Legault-Ouellet, Director of Education, Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord. “Since September, she has demonstrated great dedication in developing her technical skills in pastry making, which has clearly contributed to her success. We are all extremely proud of her.”
Giroux also received an Award of Excellence and a scholarship, presented to the student who achieved one of the highest scores among Francophone school boards.
