Hazmat training lined up for North Bay next week
Provincial Hazmat response teams will be in North Bay next week for some skills training.
Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says they’ll be at 22 Wing North Bay Monday through Wednesday, with training culminating with two emergency response scenarios.
He says the first will be hazmat response to an airplane at Jack Garland Airport, with the other response to a secret drug lab on the property.

“North Bay Fire and Emergency Services is a part of Ontario’s provincial hazardous materials response system led by the Ontario Fire Marshal,” says Saunders. “The response network consists of six specialized municipal fire teams strategically located across the province to handle chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives incidents. These teams located in North Bay, Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor, Thunder Bay, and Peterborough—provide 24/7 technical-level response capabilities.”
He says the teams work together, often with the Ontario Provincial Police and local Police Services, to coordinate and manage complex hazmat responses including transportation emergencies, illicit drug labs, and industrial accidents.
