Legacy naming policy could be on the way at the city

A councillor motion coming forward Tuesday night looks to create a legacy naming policy in the city.
If approved, staff would be directed to research and report back on best practices and provide a draft naming policy for all non-commercial honorific or commemorative naming decisions.
The motion says part of the reason a standalone policy is needed is to eliminate any perception of bias when naming public assets, parks, facilities, rooms, or infrastructure after people or groups.
“Whereas without a dedicated policy, honorific or commemorative naming decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, which may lead to perceptions of favoritism or inconsistency, unclear thresholds for what constitutes a “significant contribution,” difficulty explaining why one request is approved while another is not,” states the motion.
The motion also says a policy would also provide clear guidance and create a transparent process for naming decisions.
