Margaret Helen (Peggy) Charter
April 29, 1926 - June 17, 2026
Peggy was born in 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan to John and Margaret Whitham.
The family returned to Paris, Ontario when Peggy was two. She was close to her older sister Janey, strong willed, and stunning - her starlet looks and charisma earned her a modelling job with the local Penman’s woollen mill as a teen. Soon afterward she went to work for Bell telephone in Toronto,
It was in Toronto a few years later at a party where she met a distant cousin, Harvey Charters (whose dad was related by marriage to Peggy’s aunt Ida). Harvey, a 1936 Olympic medallist, had recently returned from the war in Europe. They were married in 1947, and lived in the Beaches when their first child Kent was born. Soon they moved for Harvey’s Ontario Hydro job to North Bay - and there Peggy lived, for over 70 years, on the shore of Trout Lake.
Mother of four, athletic, well dressed, excellent cook, and with high academic standards for all her children, she reminded us of June Cleaver. Like her husband Harvey, she valued culture and knowledge, and with her sister Janey she traveled to Greece, Italy and Turkey. When the opportunity to go back to school presented itself, Peggy earned a BA in Philosophy, at the age of 69. Students and staff at Canadore/Nipissing University knew her for many years as a librarian there.
Peggy liked her treats and her fun times too - she enjoyed her lager and her licorice, and she liked to travel, swim, golf, skate, and ski with Harvey. She also spent many good holidays with her sister Janey, and loved to reminisce about the old days in Paris. She projected a polite, amused detachment but her strong will was evident to everyone close to her.
The family would like to thank the caring, accomplished staff at Cassellholme Long-Term Care in North Bay, especially those from the Maple wing and the fourth floor. Dr. Gauthier and all the Casselholme staff provided outstanding care for the last two years of Peggy’s life. She was affectionately nicknamed “Feisty”.
Peggy is remembered fondly by her family Kent (Linda), Doug (Deirdre), Kim (Robert) and her grandchildren Taryn and Emma. Predeceased by son, Craig.
