More than $10,000 was raised in the recent Anita Couchie Memorial Charity Golf Tournament.

The event, hosted by Brian Couchie, along with friends and family, was held at the end of May at Osprey Links Golf Course, in support of cancer care at North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC).

“On New Year’s Eve in 2013, my wife Anita, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma,” he says. “While fighting this disease, Anita never complained. The nurses and support staff in the Chemotherapy Unit did an excellent job of making it as pleasant as possible. I wanted to do this tournament in my great appreciation to the nurses and staff working in cancer care at North Bay Regional Health Centre.”

This year’s proceeds will be supporting an additional ultrasound machine that will be used in diagnosing breast cancer.

Officials say this will increase NBRHC’s fleet from 5 to 6 ultrasounds, better support radiologist capacity, and reduce the time between abnormal mammogram screening and definitive diagnosis.

They add over the past four years, the tournament has helped raise more than $57,000.

“We are grateful to Brian, the golfers and sponsors that made this tournament a success,” says Tammy Morison, President & CEO, NBRHC Foundation. “We are also pleased to share that proceeds from this year’s tournament will be part of helping our community toward achieving a 2:1 matching gift from FDC Foundation, tripling the impact of our community’s generosity.”

The health centre says each year, more than 1,200 people in our area are diagnosed with cancer, with NBRHC playing an important role in their care.
