NBFES says check official sources when fire bans are issued

By Richard Coffin

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services (NBFES) is reminding residents that valid open air burning permits are required in the city.

They’re also advising people to check official sources when it comes to fire bans being issued.

“Over the past several years, we have become aware of instances where internet search engines and artificial intelligence (AI) tools have incorrectly reported that North Bay is under a fire ban when no such ban exists,” states a release. “While these tools can be useful, they do not always provide current or accurate local fire restriction information.”

Officials say you can verify the status of fire bans and restrictions online:
• North Bay Fire & Emergency Services website
• Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Forest Fire Info Map
• Burning Permit Application on the city’s website

The fire department says residents planning to conduct open air burning are encouraged to review the by-law requirements and obtain the necessary permit before burning.

They say failure to comply with permit conditions or by-law requirements may result in enforcement action and the permit being revoked.
