Nearly a third of Canada Road Safety Week charges were for speeding

City police filed 63 charges during the recent Canada Road Safety Week campaign.

From May 11-15, the North Bay Police Service Traffic Section, with support from the Auxiliary Unit, conducted enforcement and education initiatives.

Officers were focused on high-risk driving behaviours, traffic safety priorities, and concerns raised by residents in several locations

They included Airport Road, Carmichael Drive, Lakeshore Drive, Pinewood Park Drive, Sage Road, and Ski Club Road.

Police say 19 of the charges were for speeding, while one driver was charged with impaired operation by drug, and another was charged with having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

Other charges included:
· Disobey Sign
· Fail to Stop at Pedestrian Crossover
· Drive with Hand-held Communication Device
· Following too Closely
· Driver – Fail to Properly Wear Seatbelt
· Turn Not in Safety
· Red Light – Fail to Stop
· Non-Authorized Driving on Paved Shoulder
· Disobey Lane Light
· Class G1 Licence Holder – Unaccompanied by Qualified Driver

Officers also issued fourteen 72-hour warning notices for offences including fail to surrender licence, fail to have insurance card, driving with an expired licence, obstructed licence plate, drive without proper rear light, and illegally dark window tint.

“While this week’s enforcement efforts showed strong results, we recognize the traffic safety concerns raised by our community and remain focused on proactive enforcement and education to improve road safety throughout the year,” says A/Insp. Long.

Local elementary students also shared their traffic safety concerns through artwork, participating in the Think of Me Campaign.

North Bay Police also say there were six collisions during Canada Road Safety Week, which was down a third compared to the previous week.
