New program allows for paramedic support off the beaten path
Local paramedics have a new way to reach people-in-need after the launch of an Off-Road Response Program.

It includes the use of a custom-fitted Polaris Ranger 1000 XP off-road vehicle that supports patient access and transport over varied terrain and seasonal conditions.
The vehicle also has specialized equipment and a dedicated trailer.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) says with vast rural and recreational areas in the district, the program gives Paramedic Services the ability to respond to incidents where conventional ambulances may face access limitations.

“When emergencies happen in areas that are difficult to access by standard emergency vehicles, timing, and coordination matter,” says Mark King, DNSSAB Board Chair. “This program gives our paramedics an additional tool to support patient care in these situations, while continuing to prioritize safety and strong partnerships.”
Officials say training has included collaboration with local Fire Departments and Police Services to support coordinated responses when incidents occur in challenging environments.
They add the off-road response vehicle can also be used to support planned medical coverage at festivals and community events where factors such as terrain, congestion, or site layout may limit access for standard emergency vehicles.
DNSSAB says it also secured external funding sources to support the program, including Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund and TC Energy’s Build Strong program.
Officials say while the Off-Road Response Program adds flexibility to paramedic response options, deployment decisions will continue to be based on incident-specific considerations, including terrain, weather conditions, safety, and coordination with partner agencies.
