Program eyeing tree growth in ‘old city’ section of North Bay

By Richard Coffin

100 trees are available through this year’s Grow Our Canopy program in North Bay. Trees for Nipissing is teaming up with the City of North Bay for the fifth consecutive year.

Residential property owners can help grow the City’s tree canopy by purchasing a tree.

They’re available at a cost of $22, with officials saying new this year is a lower cost for trees for properties in the Old City, between Algonquin, Fisher, McIntyre and the Bypass.

“Trees for Nipissing is pleased to be partnering with the City of North Bay to deliver this program again and especially to increase the tree canopy in the Old City area,” said Trees for Nipissing Administrator Peggy Walsh Craig. “Homes with trees are more valuable, cooler and have a built-in air filter.”

A variety of trees will be available, including taller species such as red oak, hackberry and sycamore.

Smaller trees include pagoda dogwood and pin cherry.  Trees will be in pots and range from two to five feet (60-150cm) tall.

Pick up will be at Lee Park, by the Gateway of the North sign, in early May.
