Council being asked to extend airport financial support

Council being asked to extend airport financial support

By Richard Coffin

Up until now Jack Garland Airport hasn’t had to tap into a subsidy provided by the city to cover operating costs.

But that’s changed.

“It is projected that the Airport will require $200,000 at the end of June 2026 and will be utilizing the balance of the $720,000 that was approved through the 2026 budget by the end of the year,” states a staff report coming to council next week.

Reasons cited include depleted operating reserves, challenging winter operations and daily Air Canada service taking off for good earlier this year.

Council is being asked to extend the support and approve up to $450,000 to cover the first six months of next year.

The report says discussions on providing a subsidy for the rest of 2027 will take place during next year’s budget discussions.
